Superexchange dominates in magnetic topological insulators

چکیده
It has been suggested that the enlarged spin susceptibility in topological insulators, described by Van Vleck's formalism, accounts for ferromagnetism of bismuth-antimony chalcogenides doped with transition metal impurities. In contrast, earlier studies HgTe and related systems pointed out interband analog Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction (the Bloembergen-Rowland mechanism) leads to antiferromagnetic coupling between pairs localized spins. Here, we critically revisit these two approaches, show their shortcomings, elucidate why magnitude contribution is small even systems. From proposed theoretical approach our computational magnetism Mn-doped CdTe, conclude that, absence band carriers, superexchange dominates, its sign depends on coordination charge state magnetic impurities rather than class host material.

Electrically Tunable Magnetism in Magnetic Topological Insulators.
The external controllability of the magnetic properties in topological insulators would be important both for fundamental and practical interests. Here we predict the electric-field control of ferromagnetism in a thin film of insulating magnetic topological insulators. The decrease of band inversion by the application of electric fields results in a reduction of magnetic susceptibility, and hen...

We work out the action of the SL(2,Z) electric-magnetic duality group for an insulator with a nontrivial permittivity, permeability, and theta angle. This theory has recently been proposed to be the correct low-energy effective action for topological insulators. As applications, we give manifestly SL(2,Z) covariant expressions for the Faraday rotation at orthogonal incidence at the interface of...

Revelation of emerging exotic states of topological insulators (TIs) for future quantum computing applications relies on breaking time-reversal symmetry and opening a surface energy gap. Here, we report on the transport response of Bi2Te3 TI thin films in the presence of varying Cr dopants. By tracking the magnetoconductance (MC) in a low doping regime we observed a progressive crossover from w...
متن کاملEnhancement of surface photocurrents in topological insulators using magnetic superlattices
The gapless surface states of topological insulators (TI) can potentially be used to detect and harvest low-frequency infrared light. Nonetheless, it was shown that significant surface photocurrents due to light with frequency below the bulk gap are rather hard to produce. Here we demonstrate that a periodic magnetic pattern added to the surface dramatically enhances surface photocurrents in TI...
متن کاملVisualization of superparamagnetic dynamics in magnetic topological insulators
Quantized Hall conductance is a generic feature of two-dimensional electronic systems with broken time reversal symmetry. In the quantum anomalous Hall state recently discovered in magnetic topological insulators, time reversal symmetry is believed to be broken by long-range ferromagnetic order, with quantized resistance observed even at zero external magnetic field. We use scanning nanoSQUID (...
